Pumped storage power station

BJEC is the first investigation design enterprise engaged in the study of technology of pumped storage power stations. Since 1970s, based on the development trends of high head and large capacity for pumped storage power stations globally, research on relevant technology has been carried out. The scientific achievements played an important role in the development of design technology and construction of project for pumped storage power stations in China. Considering the power system features and distribution of water resources, the planning of site selection for pumped storage power stations is progressing gradually, including Hebei (including Beijing and Tianjin), Shanxi, Inner Mongolia, Jilin, Liaoning, Heilongjiang, Shandong, Jiangsu, Anhui, Guangdong, etc. The investigation and design of more than 20 large-sized pumped storage power stations have been carried out, including Shisanling, Langya Mountain, Zhanghewan, Xilongchi, Hohhot, Dunhua, Fengning, Yimeng, Wendeng, etc. Among them, pumped storage power stations in Ming Tombs (Beijing), Langya Mountain (Anhui), Zhangjiawan (Hebei), Xilongchi (Shanxi) ,Hohhot (Inner Mongolia) and Dunhua (Jilin) were put into operation in 1997, 2006, 2008, 2012, 2014 and 2021 successively.

After years of practice, BJEC has developed a set of core technology of investigation and design for pumped storage power projects and mastered a series of key technologies, such as the theories and methods of the demand analysis and planning arrangement for pumped storage in complex power system, the design of whole reservoir seepage control with bituminous concrete and reinforced concrete, the technology of reservoir basin seepage control in karst area, the theories and methods of structural design for penstocks with extra high head & high PD value and underground crescent-rib reinforced bifurcation, the design of intake and outlet based on bidirectional flow, the layout and excavation support design of large underground caverns under complex geological conditions, the hydraulic transient design of high head water conveyance and power generation system, the key technical parameter selection for 700m high head pumped storage units, the application of pumped storage variable speed unit technology, and the coordination of project layout and ecological environment, etc.

In addition, BJEC has prepared the sector technical standard “Code for Design of Pumped Storage Power Stations”, which provides a strong support for the construction of pumped storage power stations in China.

Shisanling pumped storage power station

The first pumped storage power station adopting reinforced concrete for whole upper reservoir seepage control in China, which won the second prize of national excellent project investigation and project design.




Xilongchi pumped storage power station

The first pumped storage power station in China using modified bituminous concrete face slab for seepage control.

 It won the national gold award for excellent investigation and design of water conservancy and hydropower project.





Pumped storage power station in Hohhot, Inner Mongolia

The asphalt concrete face slab for the upper reservoir adopts modified bituminous concrete technology, which can withstand extreme low temperature (-41.8℃) and is internationally leading. It won the first prize of excellent project investigation and design in hydropower industry, and national gold award for excellent investigation and design of water conservancy and hydropower project.

 

The first project in the world using the simplified compound section of bituminous concrete facing for seepage control of the whole reservoir. It won the FIDIC Project Excellence Award, Gold Award for national excellent water conservancy and hydropower project design, and Silver Award for national excellent water conservancy and hydropower project investigation and survey.





Langyashan pumped storage power station

The first pumped storage power station adopting local seepage control at the upper reservoir in Karst area in China.





Fengning pumped storage power station

A weekly regulating pumped storage power station with the largest installed capacity in the world, which applies large-scale AC excitation variable speed units for the first time (2 sets).





Dunhua pumped storage power station (under construction)

The first domestic pumped storage power station with super high head (700m), large capacity and high speed in China.





Qingyuan pumped storage power station in Liaoning (EPC project under construction)

The first EPC project that adopts the integration of design, procurement and construction as a whole in China, and also a pumped storage EPC project with the largest contract amount and the most complete industrial chain in China.
